Materials

A 2 seater fabric sofa like the Alstons Spitfire is a homely option that’s easy on the wallet, too.  Fabric retains heat better than leather, so it won’t be cold to the touch in winter.  Plus it’s more breathable, meaning you won’t be peeling yourself off the seat during the summer months.  Since fabric is available in a variety of textures, too, you’re sure to find the right feel and look for your furnishings.  Spills will mean a proper clean, though, so bear in mind fabric will require a little more TLC.

A 2 seater leather sofa comes at a higher price point but has plenty of advantages to justify the expense.  Corrected grain leathers like the Clara’s are fantastic for family life since they are delightfully low maintenance – you can wipe up food and small spills in seconds.  Natural leathers will need to be treated more kindly but give a sofa character and distinction thanks to unique markings and colour variations.

Some of our classic sofas come in a mix of fabric and leather.  The Logan combines the prestige of traditional style features and natural leather upholstery with the cosiness of fabric seat cushions.

Colours and patterns

Colours can make all the difference to the look and feel of your room, so make sure your sofa won’t clash or be washed out by other furnishings by picking a complementary colour.

If you’d rather have a more versatile colour, a neutral or grey 2 seater sofa will do the trick.  It’s also a good choice for anyone who swaps styles regularly, since you can create different looks by dressing the sofa with throws and cushions.

Think about the purpose of your room when deciding.  If the sofa is going in a room you like to chill out in, go for a mellow colour.  If you use the room a lot, pick a colour you won’t be sick of seeing a few months down the line.

Bold colours and big patterns work well in a room where you like to entertain and are brilliant for making a style statement.  Create a dramatic look using jewel-tones and contrasting colours.

Patterns and medium colours are a brilliant choice for families, since they will be less likely to show stains.  If you’re a cat person or dog person, you can match your sofa to the colour of your pet so you aren’t constantly hoovering fur off the cushions.

Be aware that colours will fade over time, especially when placed somewhere that sees a lot of sun.  A neutral tone or grey 2 seater sofa won’t fade as obviously as a brighter colour.

Style

Finally, think about what style of sofa you’d prefer.  There are various ways to spot one style from another.

A modern 2 seater sofa will often include a track, key or tapered arm in a straight or sock style, giving it neat, clean lines.  Square or tapered feet are also a common feature, with angled feet being used for modern retro designs, as seen on the Alstons Layla 2 seater sofa.

A classic 2 seater sofa may have an ornate style of foot, like a turned or bun foot.  They may include features like scroll or ruched arms, button tufting and nailhead trims and are likely to come in natural leathers.  The Lomond is a good example of this type of sofa.

Casual 2 seater sofas like the Reva 2 seater fabric sofa place comfort first with their deep seat cushions and fabric upholstery.  Robust tapered arms are often curved for easy leaning with a book or tablet, great for nights in and lazy days.
