Our guide can shed some light on the different kinds of benches available as well as their features.  Read on for more information.

Types of bench

Storage, dining and entryway benches are all available at Furniture Barn – but which kind of bench will suit you best?

Storage benches

A storage bench combines seating with extra storage space for all your odds and ends.

Entryway benches

Perfect for hallways, an entryway bench provides a useful place to put on shoes before heading out the door.

Dining benches

A dining bench is an interesting alternative to dining chairs that gives your dining set a more unique look.  A dining bench with an X style or pedestal base is the ideal companion to a farmhouse or rustic style dining table.  For example, the Jacob bench matches the Jacob monastery table perfectly.

Materials

Our selection of wooden benches include reclaimed, pine, painted and oak benches.

  • Pine benches are easier to manoeuvre because they are light.  In addition, they are available in many different colours because pine is so easy to stain.
  • An oak bench looks beautiful in a glazed or hand waxed finish thanks to the oak’s stunning woodgrain.
  • reclaimed wooden bench can be combined with metal legs for a more industrial look, as with the Halstein.
  • For contemporary styling, a painted option is an excellent choice.  A cream, grey or white bench suits a whole host of different interiors.

Storage options

Our benches have more than one storage option to suit your look and requirements.

  • Drawers are a sturdy option that are more than capable of carrying heavier items.  Their handles add extra decoration, too.  The Winchester wooden storage bench boasts antique metal bail pull handles which complement the oak’s hand waxed finish beautifully.
  • Baskets are an excellent choice for contemporary style furnishing.  Because you can withdraw them completely from their compartments, you can not only carry their contents outside or to other parts of the house but set them on the countertop and search through them comfortably.  The Suffolk buttermilk bench and small bench both include baskets as a quaint and useful design feature.

Woodwork

Beautiful joinery can be attractive as well as functional and may even give a bench that extra something that makes you want to invest.

Here are some examples of common joinery features.

  • Breadboard ends add strength to your bench and look beautiful on farmhouse style furniture.  They can be found on rustic and painted contemporary pieces.
  • The backrest of a bench is a big blank canvas for woodworking features, so it’s the ideal place to add some panelling.  A panelled backrest gives a bench depth and definition, adding interest to the bench as a whole.  Panelled sides may also be used in this way.
  • Stretchers are pieces of wood that connect the legs of your furniture, adding strength as well as being a decorative feature.  The Luella includes lateral stretchers which connect the front legs of the bench to the back.
