We’ve provided a guide to help you choose the right sideboard furniture for your home.  Read on to learn about materials, styles, storage and more.

Materials

Sideboards can be made from a variety of woods and each type has its own strengths.  At Furniture Barn, you’re most likely to encounter oak, pine and reclaimed wooden sideboards.

Oak

If you are after a more versatile option, an oak sideboard looks fantastic in a lacquered, oiled or waxed finish thanks to its attractive woodgrain and naturally warm colour and suits traditional and contemporary style furnishings alike.  A painted oak sideboard is great for a farmhouse style setting.

Oak isn’t just favoured for its beauty, however – it’s also a heavy, sturdy wood that can easily stand the test of time.

Pine

A pine sideboard is a stylish option which is brilliant value for money.  A clear finish will give the wood a brighter, yellower coloration, guaranteed to brighten up the dining room.  A dark wood sideboard like the Claverton may also be found in pine, since pine is an easy wood to stain.  Pine is a light wood, making it easier to manoeuvre, but it’s also resilient, offering the best of both worlds.

Reclaimed wood

Reclaimed wood is a hardy alternative to new woods that boasts a distressed look and plenty of history and character – plus it’s eco-friendly.  Examples of reclaimed wooden sideboards include the Halstein and Jacob.

Styles

Our sideboards come in a selection of styles to suit all tastes.

  • For a contemporary look, a painted finish might be the way to go.  In particular, a grey, cream or white sideboard will suit a range of different furnishings and colour schemes.
  • Reclaimed options are ideal for an industrial or rustic look due to their distressed appearance.  Metal legs are also a popular feature.
  • A rustic look can easily be achieved with a chunky oak sideboard cabinet in a natural finish.

Woodworking features

Woodworking features give every piece of furniture unique flair and personality.  The possibilities are practically endless, but here’s an idea of the sorts of features you can find in our selection.

  • Breadboard ends provide extra stability and are a beautiful addition to rustic or farmhouse style furniture.
  • Panelling on doors and drawers helps to visually ‘break up’ furniture, providing a sense of extra depth.  Flat panelling can be found on rustic and contemporary furniture, but some contemporary furniture may include raised or beaded panels for additional elegance.
  • Exposed joints provide texture and interest.
  • Several different edge profiles are also available.  Contemporary furniture may include an elaborate edge like a cove or ogee, while rustic furniture may choose a roundover edge for an extra chunky appearance.  A modern design might favour an eased or square edge profile which will maintain its clean and simple shape.

Storage

Cupboards and drawers are the most common storage types in a sideboard, but other options are available.  We’ve listed some of these below.

Baskets

Baskets can be removed from the sideboard and placed on the countertop, making them a very versatile storage method.  They are also easy on the eyes and well-suited to contemporary surroundings.  Our Suffolk buttermilk sideboards include baskets.

Shelf compartments

The Sherington buffet includes shelf compartments, handy for storing mail, folders and photo albums.  Since the compartments are open, you can keep items visible and easy to access.

Wine racks

Our Winchester, Claverton and Carolina ranges include wine racks, excellent for cosy nights in or meals with friends.

Handles

They may be small, but handles can completely alter the look of your sideboard cabinet.  Various styles are available to help you achieve the right look for your home.

  • Modern retro or Scandi style options like the Shackleton and Ellie may include recessed handles.
  • D, bar or bow handles are more commonly found on modern style furniture.  The Bromley’s bow handles are sleek and straightforward.
  • Contemporary style sideboards like the Chalcot white wood sideboard may include cup handles in a silver or antique metal finish.
  • Door and drawer knobs are also a feature of contemporary style furniture, as seen on the Ledbury.  Since contemporary furniture may include more elaborate edge profiles and panelling, door and drawer knobs can help provide balance and simplicity – the ideal finishing touch.
  • Bail pull handles are a beautiful addition to rustic and contemporary style furniture.  The Farnborough sports swan neck bail pull handles while the Salisbury and Wicklow feature backplates for extra decoration.
