Telephone Tables

A telephone table is a convenient little piece of furniture that sits in precisely the right place to put your keys, mail and even a handbag or shopping bag when you’re walking in or out the front door.  Its classic purpose, of course, is to keep a landline phone as well as a handy notepad for taking down messages and appointments.

Whatever purpose you choose for your new purchase, you’ll want it to look fantastic.  It’s probably the first piece of furniture your guests will see, after all!  So, which item in our selection will be the most suitable addition to your hallway?

Below, we’ll guide you through the features to look for in our selection.

Types of wood

You’re most likely to find a wood telephone table in oak or pine, both of which have their own advantages.

Oak

An oak phone table like the Oxford looks beautiful in a lacquered, oiled or waxed finish because it has a gorgeous woodgrain that’s worth showing off.

Oak is a popular material which is used across both contemporary and rustic style furniture.  It’s also a hardy and heavy wood that will stand the test of time.

Pine

If you’re looking for a more interesting finish or would prefer something lighter and easier to lift, a pine telephone table might be the way forward.

Because pine is an easy wood to stain, it can be found in a variety of finishes, including darker finishes.  When lacquered, natural pine comes up in a yellow finish, fantastic for brightening up rooms.

Although pine often comes at a lower price point, it’s still an extremely resilient material.

Storage options

Storage gives your telephone table extra functionality.  The main kinds of storage you’re likely to see are drawers and shelves.

Drawers

A drawer is a great place to keep your pen and notepad, as well as stamps and a few spare Christmas cards.  Since this kind of table is typically kept in the hallway, a drawer also provides a bit of extra privacy.

Shelves

A shelf is a handy place to pop a pair of shoes or an umbrella.

Size

The size of telephone table you choose depends on what you need it for and how much space you have to work with.

  • If you plan to keep quite a few things on your phone table and use it for lots of different purposes, a larger model will give you room for all your bits and pieces.
  • As we mentioned above, telephone tables often take up residence in our hallways – but some hallways can be on the narrow side!  For smaller hallways, therefore, a small telephone table like the Salisbury might be just the right size.

Woodworking features

Woodworking features can provide any wooden telephone table with its own unique identity – not to mention make it more beautiful.  Some examples of woodworking features are included below.

  • Edge profiles can alter the look of your piece.  Contemporary ranges sometimes feature more elaborate edge profiles, such as ogee and cove edges, enhancing their elegance.  Rustic pieces favour roundover edges that emphasise the chunkiness of their design.  Modern collections may stick to eased or square edge profiles for a smart, simple shape.
  • Breadboard ends are a stunning addition which also give a table extra strength.  The Winchester oak telephone table includes this attractive feature.
