Which of our mattresses will give you a blissful night’s sleep?  Find out below.

Types of mattress

Open spring

Open spring mattresses contain a long piece of metal wire coiled into multiple springs.  A border wire runs around the outside to provide shape and structure.  Since open springs aren’t as supportive as other kinds of bed mattress, they are recommended for occasional use.  On the bright side, they are cheaper and much lighter than other types.

Pocket spring

A popular style, pocket spring models contain springs which are individually wrapped in fabric pockets and covered with padding or upholstery.

The number of springs varies from model to model.  That’s because each spring provides a support point for your body.  As a rule of thumb: the more coils you have, the more points of support your body has, so the better the bed will support you.

For this reason, pocket springs offer more luxury than open spring mattresses – plus, they are more breathable than memory foam or latex.

Check out our Ash 800 and Hypnos Orthocare 10 ranges for examples of pocket spring mattresses.

Memory foam

Memory foam models work by closely matching the contours of your body, distributing your weight more evenly.

They also have hypo-allergenic properties, their upholstery layer and/or support system containing high-density polyurethane rather than allergy-agitating natural materials like lambswool, often found in pocket spring mattresses.

As a result, memory foam is ideal for back pain sufferers and allergy sufferers alike.

The TEMPUR Cloud Supreme and TEMPUR Contour Supreme are both excellent examples of this style of mattress.

Hybrid

Hybrids combine one or more types of foam with a coil support system.  These foams can be one of several types, including memory, latex, or gel-containing foam.

Our hybrid models include the TEMPUR Hybrid Elite and Elder 1000.

Orthopaedic

An orthopaedic mattress is designed to ease back pain and pressure on your joints.  It also works to align your spine properly, helping to keep further back problems at bay.  Many orthopaedic options are either pocket spring or memory foam.

Comfort

Every one of us sleeps differently, so the best mattress for one person isn’t always right for someone else.  Nonetheless, there are some general pointers worth considering to find the best choice for you.

Back sleepers

If you sleep on your back, a medium firm option will be firm enough to support you properly without interfering with the natural positioning of your spinal cord.

Side sleepers

Because the sides of our bodies have more curves, it’s easier to place pressure on your joints when you sleep on your side.  This means side sleepers are more likely to experience joint pain than back sleepers.  To keep this pressure to a minimum, side sleepers tend to fare better with soft mattresses.

Stomach sleepers

If you sleep on your stomach, something firm is a good solution.  Sleeping on your stomach places huge pressure on your lower back, and a firm mattress won’t give beneath your hips, reducing your chances of developing long term back pain.

Restless sleepers

If you tend to toss and turn, a medium soft option may be the one for you.  Soft enough to mould to your body but firm enough to provide support, it suits the needs of more restless sleepers.

Do I need a new mattress?

As your mattress deteriorates with age, it gradually stops giving you the support you need, so it’s best to check whether it’s still up to the task if it’s older than seven years old.

If you notice that you can’t seem to get comfortable, or find you are experiencing pain in your hip, back or other joints, it might be time to hunt for something new.

Size

Last but not least, be sure you’ve got the right size!  Furniture Barn carry all standard mattress sizes - single, double, king size and super king – but we also stock other sizes, like long singles and small doubles.  Always check bed and mattress dimensions before buying.
